Engineering education has long positioned itself as a neutral institution, a technical enterprise untouched by systems of power. Those within the field of engineering education have spent decades trying to fix its inequities without examining what produced them—by recruiting more broadly, diversifying faces, and expanding access to a system whose foundations have gone largely unquestioned. Dr. Stephanie Masta is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a Professor of Curriculum Studies at Purdue University, where she has been on faculty since 2014. She holds a Ph.D. in Multicultural and International Curriculum Studies from Iowa State University, an M.Ed. in Higher and Postsecondary Education from Arizona State University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan.

This panel will feature undergraduate students and faculty mentors from the NSF-funded Building a Legacy in Engineering (BLE) project. BLE supports students in designing multi-month, community-engaged engineering initiatives that address root causes of inequities and are built for sustainability beyond the academic year. Sia Smith is a junior Environmental Science major at Tuskegee University with aspirations to pursue a master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene. Across every path she has explored, her work consistently returns to one central focus: community. Her interests center on environmental justice, community-centered development, and sustainable revitalization. Through her work, Sia aims to collaborate with communities rather than act on behalf of them, emphasizing empowerment, reciprocity, and local knowledge. She believes Tuskegee is already rich in culture, history, resources, and people, and her goal is to highlight and strengthen that existing beauty through meaningful engagement and research.
Hope Rockmore-Johnson is a rising senior studying Construction Science and Management at Tuskegee University. They are attending the ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition 2026 to present on undergraduate research and its role in advancing community engagement. Kendall Powe is a rising senior at Tuskegee University pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. Originally from Mableton, Georgia, she now resides in Madison, Alabama. Throughout her academic journey, Kendall has explored innovative and interdisciplinary spaces that connect technology, research, and community impact. Dr. Jessica Rush Leeker is an accomplished educator and researcher with extensive experience in applied analytics, engineering education, and social impact within STEM.
