Enhancing Curriculum Through a Required Vertically Integrated Project (RVIP)

This paper presents the design, implementation, and preliminary results of a Required Vertically Integrated Project (RVIP) on Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) within the undergraduate mechanical engineering curriculum in the Mechanical Engineering Program at (not disclosed at this time). Unlike traditional optional VIPs, this model integrates project-based learning into required courses, promoting inclusive participation and sustainability. Students engage with a multidisciplinary challenge without extra credit hours or extracurricular demands. LSCs use luminescent materials to absorb sunlight and re-emit it at longer wavelengths, guiding light to edge-mounted photovoltaic cells. They have potential applications in building façades, sound barriers and greenhouses. Such systems provide an educational context for connecting optics, material science, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and simulation. Four assignments are envisioned to span sequential required courses, Materials Science, Numerical Methods, Heat Transfer, and an upcoming Mechanics course. Each course assignment is focusing on an LSC subsystem, from PV spectral response to optical modeling, thermal management, and mechanical modeling. Student surveys revealed engagement, knowledge retention, and improved system thinking by recognizing optical and thermal design trade-offs. Faculty collaboration enabled integration with minimal disruption.
