While mental health concerns are not unique to engineering students, national data show that engineers are less likely to seek help, which can lead to escalation of symptoms. By promoting mental health and wellness in the classroom, faculty can help normalize discussions about mental health and promote a culture of wellness in engineering.
This session will help attendees:
1) Define the current state of research on mental health in engineering.
2) Recognize and respond to students who are in mental health distress.
3) Implement research-based strategies for integrating mental health into the cla ... (continued)

Karin Jensen, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Education Research at the University of Michigan. Her research interests include student mental health and wellness, engineering student career pathways, and engagement of engineering faculty in engineering education research. She was awarded a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation for her research on undergraduate mental health in engineering programs. Jensen is also a member of the ASEE Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Women a ... (continued)
Dr. Sarah Wilson is an Assistant Professor in Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Kentucky. She is the director of the Wilson Research Group, where she works to understand and improve mental health in engineering. In this way, she defines mental health as not just the absence of mental illness but a mental state in which engineers can effectively cope with stress, realize their potential, and
contribute to society. She is particularly interested in developing and implementing interventions to improve mental health related help seeking in undergraduate engineering students. Sh ... (continued)
This roundtable discussion will present information about best practices in equity audits and how they can be used to advance institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
Margie Pinnell is the inaugural Assistant Provost for Learning and Excecutive Director of the Ryan C. Harris Learning Teaching Center, effective August 1, 2022. Dr. Rivera-Jiménez is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering Education (EED) and an affiliate faculty to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on understanding the role of engineering communities while enacting their agency in participatory and transformational change. She is particularly interested in broadening the participation of minoritized communities by studying the role of professional development in shaping organizational cultures. As an education practitioner, she also looks at evidence-based practices to incorporate s ... (continued)
Dr. Meagan Pollock began her career playing with light projection on tiny microscopic mirrors as an engineer for Texas Instruments. Through her company, Engineer Inclusion, she now utilizes metaphorical projectors and mirrors to shine a light on micro and macro social systems that, when adjusted, improve student and employee success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A TEDx speaker, author, and a past recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, Meagan holds a PhD in engineering education from Purdue University, an MS in electrical engineering from ...
