Dr. Robin Hensel (robin.hensel@mail.wvu.edu), is an ASEE Fellow and a Teaching Professor in the Fundamentals of Engineering Program at West Virginia University (WVU), an R1 public, land-grant university in the Appalachian region. Over her career, she has taught mathematics, statistics, computer science, and engineering courses at two universities, held various administrative positions, developed key academic programs, and served on the ASEE First-year Programs Division Executive Board. Ms. Ann Vallie (avalli@nhsc.edu) is the Pre-Engineering Chair and Cohort Director at Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish (NHS) College, a small public tribal land-grant college and a former Engineering Faculty at Turtle Mountain Community College. Although mathematics is a foundational skill, it is often underemphasized in manufacturing process training programs. However, recent studies have identified math proficiency as a key barrier to student success and upskilling for future technologies. This session presents a comprehensive review of the mathematics curriculum in machinist training programs, analyzing how well current topics align with the requirements of advanced coursework and evolving machining technologies, and offering recommendations for curriculum enhancement.
