Session Description

Join us for this special roundtable session where we delve into the vital role of makerspaces in fostering inclusive learning environments in first-year engineering. We will first discuss strategies for building makerspaces that cater to diverse student needs and interests. We will then explore approaches for integrating hands-on making experiences into the curriculum to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. We will also consider how to effectively recruit, train, and empower near-peer mentors to staff and run makerspaces to create a supportive and collaborative learning community. Th ... (continued)

Session Description

Systemic change, or systems-level culture changes are often the goals of engineering education studies and projects. However, the activities of these projects often focus on one element of the larger system, typically the student experience. The student experience is a keystone of engineering education, but student level changes have only a small impact on the larger systems in place. This illuminates a tension between the stated vision and the actual ability to impact the systemic structures perpetuating inequitable access to, experiences within, and outcomes of engineering environments. Our pos ... (continued)
