The number of disabled students in higher education is growing (NCES, 2022), but they are still underrepresented in engineering education research, both as a study population of interest and in their representation within broader studies of engineering student experiences. Our goal is to increase representation of disabled students in research by increasing the accessibility of research designs. Increased accessibility can also support participation of non-disabled and neurotypical students in engineering education research studies. Emily Landgren (she/her) is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering researching disabilities in higher engineering education at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a disabled woman, an engineer, and a disability advocate. Her proposed dissertation work looks at the relationship between classroom acoustics and disabled students’ auditory experiences. She recently earned her Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, completing research that focused on ableism and best practices as detailed by disabled undergraduate engineering students; prior to this, she earned a B.S. in Integrated Humanities and Engineering from Lehigh University.
Chloe Wright (she/her) is a PhD student in STEM Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a researcher in the Center for Engineering Education, advised by Dr. Maura Borrego. Her own experiences as a woman in engineering inspired her to conduct research on equity in engineering education. Her work thus far is with LGBTQ+ undergraduate and graduate students in STEM. Before coming to UT, Chloe earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University.
Dr. Maura Borrego (she/they) is the E.P. Schoch Professor in Engineering, Director of the Center for Engineering Education and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and STEM Education at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Borrego is an ASEE Fellow and currently serves as Senior Associate Editor for Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering. All of Dr. Borrego’s degrees are in Materials Science and Engineering. Her M.S. and Ph.D. are from Stanford University, U.S.A, and her B.S. is from University of Wisconsin-Madison, U.S.A. Dr. Borrego advises both Emily and Chloe.

Sarah Rajala served as the 12th dean of the College of Engineering at Iowa State University from 2013 - 2019. Her previous leadership positions were at Mississippi State University as dean of engineering from 2008-13, and chair of the electrical and computer engineering department prior to being named dean. She also served at North Carolina State University as associate dean for research and graduate programs and associate dean for academic affairs in the college of engineering. Dr. Dipankar Choudhury, Lead Chief Technologist and Ansys Fellow, plays a central role in advanced technology and exploratory R&D in several key areas at Ansys Inc. such as High-Performance Computing. In addition, he leads Ansys’s Academic Program which includes coordinating collaborative research and education partnership programs with Academia centered around engineering simulation. Sangita is currently a Customer Success Engineering team Lead at Mathworks. Her team is focused on helping educators, researchers, and students achieve success. Her background is in engineering, with a BS in Computer Science and MS in Computer Science and Mathematical Modeling, both from University of Oslo.
Kaitlin Tyler is currently a Senior Academic Program Engineer at Ansys. Her role focuses on supporting the usage of Ansys tools in academia, with an emphasis on materials teaching and pre-university engagement. She is also the lead for the Ansys Academic Content Development Program, which focuses on developing instructional content to support integration of Ansys tools in curriculum. Her background is in materials science, with a PhD in the subject from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
She is very involved in ASEE. At the publication of this paper, she is the Awards Chair (past Division Chair) for the Materials Division and Chair Elect for the Corporate Members Council.
The Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion invited four panelists to explore key issues, share best practices, and engage in a thought-provoking exchange of ideas concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion. The panelist will share their perspectives on being a change agent for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in engineering and computing education.

Dr. Monique Ross has a way of bringing her audience and anyone who meets her along on her research journey in a way that makes you feel seen. She does incredible work to ensure students from Black, Latinx, and historically minoritizied backgrounds thrive in engineering and computer science. This has been her area of focus for over a decade. She has presented her work at the National Academies, and has published in JMWSE and JEE numerous times.
The reluctance of hiring managers to recruit Gen Z graduates stems from concerns over their preparedness for the workforce, particularly in areas such as teamwork, business etiquette, and real-world experience. According to recent reports, 52% of hiring managers believe new graduates lack the necessary skills for the job, 55% struggle with teamwork, and nearly 60% cite a lack of real-world experience as a key barrier to hiring Gen Z candidates.
