Session Description

In the broader literature, there has been a move to more asset-based approaches to understanding people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Research
shows that, compared to neurotypical individuals, those with ADHD often have greater resiliency, tend to be more creative and innovative, and are capable of achieving intense focus when engaging in high-interest activities and tasks. Individuals who demonstrate these positive attributes may be especially suited for positions as engineering faculty, since these are exemplary faculty traits.
This session will provide an opportunity fo ... (continued)

For those interested in: Broadening Participation in Engineering and Engineering Technology and New Members

Moderated by
  1. Dr. Homero Murzi
Speakers
  1. Cindy Finelli

Cindy Finelli (she/her) is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and
Director of Engineering Education Research at University of Michigan. Although
she does not have ADHD, she has studied students who have ADHD using an
asset-based lens. As well, she has extensive experience as a faculty developer
and has worked to identify ways the academic environment could support diverse
students. Creating inclusive learning environments that also encompass faculty is
a natural extension of her work.

  2. Dr. Nadia N. Kellam
    Arizona State University

Nadia Kellam (she/they) is Associate Professor of Engineering within The
Polytechnic School of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State
University (ASU). She is a faculty in the Engineering Education Systems and
Design (EESD) PhD program. Nadia feels that she is well-suited for an academic
career and that her ADHD has been beneficial in that she has strengths in
coming up with new research ideas, has insights when analyzing research, and
    works well across disciplines.

  3. Dr. Robin Fowler
    University of Michigan

Robin Fowler (she/her), is a Lecturer in the Program in Technical
Communication at the University of Michigan. She was diagnosed with a mood
disorder as a young adult, and her ADHD diagnosis is more recent. Her
academic journey has been affected in both positive and negative ways by
mental health issues, but her current interdisciplinary work is enabled by paths
    that she started and stopped.

  4. Prof. Arash Esmaili Zaghi P.E.
    University of Connecticut

Arash E. Zaghi, is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering at the University of Connecticut. By training, he is a structural
engineering faculty, but after his diagnosis with ADHD, he has been doing
engineering and STEM education research in the area of neurodiversity. He is a
NSF CAREER and NSF Mid-CAREER awardee. He owes his success in
research to his ADHD traits, such as risk taking, spontaneity, and divergent
thinking. He is very comfortable to work on topics outside his discipline including
his recent work involving neuroimaging and artificial intelligence.
