Faculty Development to Facilitate Institutionalization of the Engineers for One Planet Framework

Presented at Faculty Development Works in Progress Session 2

This work in progress describes an on-going study developing and delivering faculty development workshops in different modalities to create advocates for the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Framework within their institution. The EOP Framework provides a structure to include sustainable engineering principles in any course or curriculum. The current project has two nesting goals. The first goal is to provide knowledge and facilitate development of learning tools for faculty to develop in their individual classes. The second, outer goal is to provide a framework for institutionalization of sustainability principles through the EOP in engineering schools. While every step, or course, counts towards building students’ sustainability knowledge and application into design, having adoption of the EOP within an entire curriculum, will help students to better understand how to approach engineering design with systems thinking. A faculty development workshop content was developed and is being delivered in an in-person and on-line synchronous/asynchronous modality. The workshop content focuses on building a faculty’s own confidence in sustainable engineering principles, which will ultimately increase their competency in teaching sustainable engineering concepts in their courses. Simultaneously, this workshop offers a cohort to create a peer community who cannot only share about their lessons learned from modifying their courses with sustainability content, but also advocating to their colleagues and administration for curriculum-wide change. There are multiple ways for an educational framework to become institutionalized, and working through faculty development to promote this change is a form of a bottom-up approach. This form can begin to demonstrate to administration that there is a value and movement towards this new approach, and work towards gaining administrative support. This work will review the workshop content, observations from both modalities on their confidence in sustainable engineering principles and their comfort with advocating for inclusion of EOP into a full curriculum.
