U481Q·SUNDAY WORKSHOP: Remote Delivery of Cutting-Edge Labs for Advanced Engineering Courses
Workshop Sponsored Workshops
Sun. June 21, 2026 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
E-216D, Charlotte Convention Center
Session Description

Free ticketed event
This workshop explores innovative methods for delivering advanced engineering labs remotely, providing nearly realistic, hands-on experiences by integrating virtual models with real hardware. Participants will learn essential technologies for creating accessible, high-quality remote labs suitable for cutting-edge engineering courses in virtual or hybrid formats. Using a digital twin of a miniature water bottling plant as a case study, the workshop showcases how this technology transforms smart manufacturing education and training.
Attendees will experience how digital twins—developed with MATLAB Simulink, Simscape, and real-time data integration—create accurate virtual replicas of physical systems. By providing remote access to actual hardware through MySQL, Siemens PLCs, and Snap7 middleware, participants can interact with live equipment, achieving a near-realistic lab experience as they monitor complex operations.
The workshop covers predictive modeling and remote troubleshooting for tasks like temperature control, color mixing, and cooling, showing how real-time data and predictive analytics drive smarter process optimization. In a hands-on session using PowerBI, participants will gain practical skills in data-driven decision-making by analyzing and visualizing live data.

By the end, participants will see how combining digital twins with remote hardware access can elevate engineering education and drive scalable, cost-effective innovation in smart manufacturing contexts.
