This panel brings together Women in Engineering program leaders from a diverse range of academic institutions - from large public research universities to small private liberal arts colleges - to share broad perspectives on designing, building, and implementing initiatives that support undergraduate engineering student success. Originating from ongoing discussions at ASEE WIED meetings, this session addresses a pressing need for effective, proven strategies to recruit and retain engineering students, especially women. This panel discussion will benefit professionals looking to start or refresh pr ... (continued)

Dr. Yuting Chen is Teaching Associate Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Kathy brings a rich array of life experiences to the position of Director of WE in RIT. After graduating from a women’s college where she learned first-hand the value of a female-centric support network, Kathy made her way to Silicon Valley. There she studied CMOS Mask Layout Design which eventually led her to a position in IT for a semiconductor IP start-up. Fast forward through coast-to-coast moves to Boston, San Diego and finally Rochester, Kathy spent the better part of the past decade in the fitness industry while raising her daughter, wearing every hat from personal trainer and cycling inst ... Teaching-focused faculty (TFF) play a critical role in engineering education, yet hiring practices, promotion pathways, and institutional support structures vary widely across institutions. This interactive workshop will bring together engineering educators to examine emerging research and share practical strategies for supporting and advancing TFF careers.
The session will begin with a brief overview of the literature on TFF in engineering and presentation of preliminary results from a national survey examining policies, promotion pathways, and institutional supports. Participants will then eng ... (continued)

Engineering education research focused on equity and social justice often engages in topics such as mental health, identity, marginalization, and/or trauma. Many researchers study systems or experiences that are personally meaningful or closely connected to their own lives. As a result, this work can involve emotional labor that is not always acknowledged or supported within traditional research environments.
This panel introduces trauma stewardship as a starting point for thinking about how engineering education researchers might approach this work with greater care, reflection, and intention ... (continued)

When teaching and problem solving, integrating multiple perspectives and ways of representing information creates an inclusive learning and work environment. Art is an expression of perspective and emphasizes how culture and context impact how we communicate ideas, feelings, problems, etc. in a non-equation or text form. Many aspects of creating and/or looking at art require the same skills for problem solving, such as problem recognition, definition, and representation. This workshop will introduce STEM educators to the concepts of mental models, the problem-solving cycle, and mindsets of effect ... (continued)

Did you know…
- 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ students fear for their physical safety on college campuses? 1 in 3 LGBTQIA+ students are made to feel uncomfortable in our classrooms?
- LGBTQIA+ engineering students are more likely than women, underrepresented minorities, and non-LGBTQIA+ peers to report a chilly climate?
- STEM departments are lagging way behind other disciplines in the adoption of LGBTQIA+-inclusive practices?
You can help change this! Safe Zone Workshops are interactive, research-informed workshops for students, faculty, and the professional community, during which participants will b ... (continued)

Sociology & STEM: Informing Engineering Practice with Sociology
Come explore Engineering Practice, the new home of engineering in sociology. Sociologists working in this space can help reveal student pathways by taking a broader approach to engineering education. We aim to help all ASEE members understand that sociologists are in this space, doing this work, and can be a valuable resource to your efforts.
With this panel and fishbowl discussion, we will highlight sociology’s role in addressing broadening participation, improving student outcomes, and building ethical and social awar ... (continued)
