Engineering education research focused on equity and social justice often engages in topics such as mental health, identity, marginalization, and/or trauma. Many researchers study systems or experiences that are personally meaningful or closely connected to their own lives. As a result, this work can involve emotional labor that is not always acknowledged or supported within traditional research environments.
This panel introduces trauma stewardship as a starting point for thinking about how engineering education researchers might approach this work with greater care, reflection, and intention ... (continued)

When teaching and problem solving, integrating multiple perspectives and ways of representing information creates an inclusive learning and work environment. Art is an expression of perspective and emphasizes how culture and context impact how we communicate ideas, feelings, problems, etc. in a non-equation or text form. Many aspects of creating and/or looking at art require the same skills for problem solving, such as problem recognition, definition, and representation. This workshop will introduce STEM educators to the concepts of mental models, the problem-solving cycle, and mindsets of effect ... (continued)

Did you know…
- 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ students fear for their physical safety on college campuses? 1 in 3 LGBTQIA+ students are made to feel uncomfortable in our classrooms?
- LGBTQIA+ engineering students are more likely than women, underrepresented minorities, and non-LGBTQIA+ peers to report a chilly climate?
- STEM departments are lagging way behind other disciplines in the adoption of LGBTQIA+-inclusive practices?
You can help change this! Safe Zone Workshops are interactive, research-informed workshops for students, faculty, and the professional community, during which participants will b ... (continued)
