A First-Year Engineering Mentoring Program Service Blueprint Analysis: Insights and Lessons Learned in Program Design and Implementation

This research study analyzes a peer mentoring program developed to support first-year engineering and computer science students. Through the use of the service blueprints’ design-based methodology, the program's impact and structure are investigated. Insights and takeaways obtained from student reflections collectively contribute to a fuller, more comprehensive understanding of the program. The students, a graduate assistant and two student coordinators, have remained engaged with the program over multiple years and are now part of the leadership team. In that capacity, they collaborate with the program’s director and manager to support the program's implementation and development, which is designed to remain dynamic as it is continuously improved to better serve student needs.

Mentoring programs are essential to fostering support networks, community, motivation, and a sense of belonging. These elements cultivate students' academic, social, and professional development by providing essential support during the first year of university. This analysis examines the operational framework of the program that allows for this to occur. By identifying key components and critical touchpoints between mentors, mentees, and the program leadership team, the study maps how these interactions work together.

The findings aid in identifying operational weaknesses, improving efficiency, enhancing collaboration, highlighting existing strengths, and presenting first-hand experiences gained through several years of direct involvement with the program. In combination with the service blueprint that focuses on program design, integrating student perspectives may facilitate the development and implementation of similar peer mentoring initiatives at other schools of engineering. The results are intended to offer a framework for implementation, guidance, and best practices supported by the service blueprint to those in similar situations or seeking to learn more.
