Scaling Active Group Office Hours: Developing TA Training Guidelines for Equitable and Replicable Student Support in Large Engineering Courses

Active Group Office Hours (AGOH) enhance engagement and success in high-enrollment engineering courses, yet scaling these benefits remains a challenge when transitioning from instructor-led to Teaching Assistant (TA)-led sessions. This mixed-methods study evaluates the scalability of AGOH in large-enrollment environments (N300) by comparing student responses across instructor-led and trained undergraduate TA-led sessions. Utilizing Office Hours (OH) Exit Slip Survey and End-of-Term Evaluation Survey, this research analyzes the efficacy of a training and shadowing model for TAs. Data collection focuses on student self-reporting and feedback from the teaching team to identify key active learning elements. The study culminates in empirically informed guiding principles for early-term TA training. This research provides an evidence-based framework for AGOH and offers a scalable structure for TA-led recitations, ensuring that active learning remains a replicable and equitable mechanism for student support across diverse large-class environments.
