Laboratory courses are essential in electrical engineering education, bridging theoretical concepts with hands-on experience. The Electrical Engineering II (EE II) laboratory reinforces Laplace-based modeling, transfer functions, and system response analysis through experimentation. However, traditional lab formats exhibit several limitations, including poor structural organization in static handbooks, inadequate support for embedded code, limited integration of Python-based scientific computing, and insufficient emphasis on experimental data analysis workflows.
To address these challenges, the lab format was redesigned with two key improvements. First, a GitHub repository–based laboratory handbook replaces static documents with GitHub Flavored Markdown. It features modular, checkpoint-driven tasks, integrating code, mathematical content, and multimedia resources. Second, Jupyter Notebook–based reports enable students to combine documentation, computation, and data analysis using tools such as NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib. This paper presents the design, implementation, and assessment of the redesigned laboratory format.
This work addresses the ASEE Electrical and Computer Engineering Division topic “Laboratory development and innovation.”
