Carlone and Johnson (2007) posit that science identity (SI) development is informed by three interconnected dimensions: competence, performance, and recognition. Research increasingly supports that developing and sustaining a science and engineering (S&E) identity is important for persistence in STEM, particularly for historically underrepresented students who make up a critical mass at Hispanic Serving Institutions (Camacho & Lord, 2013; Rodriguez & Lehman, 2019). These students often lack the opportunities to participate in STEM activities, engage with STEM mentors, or see themselves represented in STEM fields, which may make it difficult for them to develop and maintain S&E identities (Carlone & Johnson 2007; Rodriguez, 2015) and/or result in disrupted S&E identities (Camacho & Lord, 2013; Carlone & Johnson, 2007).
Herrera and Sanchez’s (2022) community-centered SI model is the first to recognize the role of community-based assets in S&E development. To date, however, there are no existing scales that incorporate the role of community-derived assets in how we measure STEM identity at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Opportunities exist for understanding how HSIs, through organizational structures for serving, provide opportunities to develop STEM competencies, perform roles of a science and engineering person that are responsive to local community needs, and receive recognition from a more diverse group of important others.
The work presented here focuses on a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project (#XXXX) with a goal of developing S&E identity measures grounded in community. Drawing on prior scholarship, we developed and piloted a 41-item scale. We present data from cognitive interviews with 9 science and engineering undergraduates attending an HSI aimed at validating and refining the community-grounded S&E scale. We were specifically concerned with item interpretation, or how students understood and responded to each item, coherence, and relevance. Preliminary findings provide insight into the role of cognitive interviews in survey development and refinement, and serve as an important step in the scale validation process.
