To broaden participation and applications of computing, programming (coding) education needs to represent a variety of contexts and uses. For five years, we have supervised undergraduate students in their creation of coding tutorials that demonstrate fundamental concepts with unique applications that relate to their lives. These “peer-instructor” videos are publicly available on YouTube and also integrated into a website, Codewit.us, as open educational resources for studying and practicing coding. This paper details a qualitative study of the process, tools, and strategies students adopted to relate coding to their lives, as well as their reported impacts of
participating in creating the educational videos.
We conducted two focus groups (n=7) of student content creators. In the focus groups, students reflected on their experiences participating in content ideation, receiving feedback, recording tutorial videos, and iterating on each of these activities. In addition, participants collaborated in recommending techniques to best support other students in creating educational videos that similarly relate coding to their own lived experiences. This paper highlights trends from feedback gathered in the focus groups and recommends a framework for creating coding video tutorials as an educational activity.
