The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BS in Engineering) at Nova Southeastern University represents a new model for undergraduate engineering education that unites strong foundational principles with regional relevance and global applicability. Recently accredited by ABET, the program offers two concentrations, Biomedical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering, within a single interdisciplinary framework. This structure allows students to develop versatile competencies that bridge technology, health, and sustainability.
The program was designed in response to the needs of South Florida’s coastal environment, which is often described as ground zero for climate change and sea-level rise. Environmental resilience and sustainability are integrated into every level of the curriculum. Students build a solid foundation in mechanics, materials, thermal and fluid systems, and design engineering while engaging in simulation-based learning using tools such as Ansys, SolidWorks, and Mastercam. This approach strengthens both conceptual understanding and environmental responsibility.
The program currently enrolls approximately 40 students each year, fostering close mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration. Alumni are now contributing to major organizations such as Boeing, Florida Power & Light, NextEra Energy, Medtronics, General Electric and Craft Construction, applying the same principles of digital engineering, efficiency, and sustainability that define their training. This paper discusses the program’s design philosophy, ABET accreditation process, and educational outcomes, demonstrating how a regionally inspired curriculum can produce globally competent engineers prepared to address challenges in energy, healthcare, and infrastructure.
