Embedding Innovation and Entrepreneurial Capacity in Engineering Education: The EPIIC Initiative at Seattle University
Abstract Seattle University participated in a multi-university initiative to cultivate innovation and entrepreneurial capacity across engineering education. Grounded in the hypothesis that innovation shaped by humanistic values can distinguish the university as a place “where innovation meets humanity,” this effort integrates curricular reform, experiential learning, and external partnerships to build a holistic innovation ecosystem. The initiative is organized around four pillars—Foundation, Education, Programs, and Partnerships—which support students and faculty in developing innovation competencies. This paper details the implementation of an Innovation Lab, the integration of modular curriculum into core engineering courses, and the establishment of an "Innovator-in-Residence" program. Early indicators from KPI dashboards and maturity models suggest successful integration of innovation mindsets. This case study offers a replicable framework for institutions seeking to align institutional mission with impact-driven student learning.
