Brief Description of Workshop
This workshop will focus on how participatory research methods (e.g., photovoice) can be leveraged to elevate the participant voices during research and intervention development. The facilitators’ prior work will guide attendees to see how centering narratives can lead to impactful community change. This workshop will be the first of a two-part living visual-based experience. In this session, participants will be introduced to photovoice, which empowers individuals by capturing their experiences through photography and focus group discussions aimed at “Voicing Our Individual and Collective Experiences” (VOICE, Wang & Burris, 1997). Participants will then be given a prompt and platform to upload their images during the ASEE conference. The prompt below is based on ECSJ’s focus, as stated in their 2025 Call for Papers: to cultivate shared understandings of oppressive systems, structures, and practices, leveraging those shared understandings to act collectively in ways that interrupt harm and transform material conditions by building resilient, culturally sustaining relationships and networks.

Speakers

1. Dr. Jeremy A. Magruder Waisome

   University of Florida

   Dr. Jeremy A. Magruder Waisome is the Thomas O. Hunter Rising Star Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Florida (UF) in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Dr. Waisome leads the PRISEM Lab, where her research focuses on broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computing (STEM+C). Her primary research interests include understanding the influence of mentoring and self-efficacy on student trajectories and interests in STEM+C. She is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Roundtable on Mentoring, Well-being, and Professional Development and an expert for the Transforming Trajectories of Women of Color in Tech. Dr. Waisome is a proud triple Gator with a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in civil engineering from UF, where she is a member of the UF Hall of Fame and a 2024 40 Gators Under 40 Awardee.

2. Dr. Jerrod A Henderson

   University of Houston - COE

   Dr. Jerrod A. Henderson is an Assistant Professor in the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston (UH). Dr. Henderson has dedicated his career to increasing the number of students who are in pathways to pursue STEM careers. He believes that exposing students to STEM early will have a lasting impact on their lives and academic pursuits. He began his higher education pursuits at Morehouse College and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, where he earned degrees in both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering as a part of the Atlanta University Center’s Dual Degree in Engineering Program. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Henderson is a 2023 NSF CAREER Awardee, 2023 UH Engineering Alumni Association Roger Eichhorn Service Awardee, and a 2021 recipient of the Black Engineer of the Year Educational Leadership College Level Promotion of Education Awardee.
