Systematic Review: Integrating Technology-Enhanced Design-Thinking into Civic Education (Works In Progress)

Presented at Liberal Education/Engineering & Society Division (LEES) Technical Session 7: Interdisciplinarity

This systematic review aims to explore the integration of design-thinking using technology into civic education. The increasing importance of fostering civic competencies alongside technical skills in students necessitates innovative educational approaches. We are conducting a comprehensive search of relevant databases, including Google Scholar, JSTOR, IEEE Xplore, and ERIC, focusing on studies published in the last decade. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed articles involving K-12 and higher education settings. The review synthesizes findings from existing studies, highlighting the effectiveness of various gamified elements and technological tools in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. Our analysis identifies key trends, such as the positive impact of gamified challenges and collaborative platforms, and underscores gaps, particularly in long-term efficacy studies. Practical recommendations for educators and policymakers are provided, along with suggestions for future research. This review contributes to the field by offering a consolidated understanding of best practices and innovative strategies for integrating design-thinking in civic education through technology.
