This research paper will synthesize findings from two research grants studying HyFlex instruction in a first-year design course. “HyFlex” is a method of providing students with autonomy to participate in person or online and in many cases fluidly blending the two based on the instructor or students' individual needs. While HyFlex is not new, it has become more feasible since COVID-19 as technologies have improved and cultural acceptance of remote work has evolved. Our two funded projects have resulted in a variety of specific research studies that are published in papers. A multicase study method will be used where each study is a case. This presentation will synthesize multiple findings sharing each as data sources and draw conclusions across the larger set of results with implications for the future of HyFlex education. Findings will include the impacts on students' basic psychological needs, grades, and attendance habits as well as instructor approaches.
