In engineering and engineering technology programs, traditional learning in the classroom setting generally involves the professor explaining and students listening. Some authors refer to it as the Chalk and Talk approach. However, there is a need to move into a more student centered approach. One such approach is the project-based learning (PBL) approach. PBL has been mentioned in the literature with use in different settings or programs such as electrical engineering, computer engineering, civil engineering, and engineering technology. It is often found in context with a fundamentals of engineering course. It has been reported in the literature that more needs to be done. In this paper, the application of the PBL method as used in an upper level engineering technology course is discussed. This paper outlines a review of previous efforts, reported advantages and challenges implementing PBL, the methodology used in the application of research projects in the upper level course, as well as a list of the type of projects, results and discussions, and conclusions.
