Integrating Engineering Standards into Manufacturing Engineering Curriculum

Presented at Technology Integration in Manufacturing Curriculum

Standards cover a huge range of manufacturing activities, from making a product, managing a process, to delivering a service or supplying materials. Standards ensure the safety, quality, and reliability of these products, processes, and services. It is critical that students are educated to establish a consensus on standards and develop the skills of locating and applying engineering standards. To fulfill this need, education about standards has been integrated into the manufacturing engineering (MfgE) curriculum at Georgia Southern University. Selected standards from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) were introduced to undergraduate and graduate level students. This paper discusses the design of the curriculum and how standards are incorporated into additive manufacturing and robotics courses. The authors also introduce how to adopt and replicate these course materials at other Institute of Higher Education (IHE).
