As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Hyflex learning (i.e. a mix of synchronous in-person and virtual attendance) has become more and more common in schools and universities across the world. However, the popularity of Hyflex learning is steadily decreasing with an increasing number of institutions returning to primarily in-person learning. In this paper, we argue for the continuation of Hyflex modes of instruction, demonstrating both its effectiveness and robustness in accommodating a variety of circumstances that would have otherwise been detrimental to student learning. Through empirical interviews at both the undergraduate and graduate levels across four design studio courses, we build a case for continued support towards Hyflex modalities of learning.
