U602C·SUNDAY WORKSHOP: Developing Inclusive Curriculum - Why and How
Workshop CoNECD HQ Sessions
Sun. February 26, 2023 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
New Levee, Marriott New Orleans
Session Description

Ticketed event
This workshop equips participants with practical, research-based strategies to create inclusive classrooms in engineering courses. The culture of engineering education has proven to be a barrier to diversity in terms of its impact on student interest, motivation, sense of belonging, and persistence. One of the key reasons cited for students leaving STEM is the perception of a chilly climate, especially by those who are members of underrepresented groups. In 2016 The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Rowan University received an NSF RED (Revolutionizing Engineering Departments) grant to transform the department culture by developing a collective intentionality for inclusion. A significant focus of this grant was to develop and integrate content and pedagogy into core civil engineering courses in the middle years of the curriculum. This workshop presents a model for inclusive pedagogy and curriculum which is based on critical pedagogy and research on engineering culture. The workshop provides practical examples of inclusive strategies that were used to transform our core courses. Participants will explore a variety of ways in which they can integrate inclusive pedagogy and content into their own engineering and computer science courses to create a learning environment in which all students can learn and thrive. This workshop is open to all engineering and computer science educators.
